Adult Services

Anyone the age of 12 or older who may have been exposed to a sexually transmitted disease (STD) is encouraged to make an appointment. If a disease is found, treatment will be provided at the time of the visit. STD counseling services are included.

What to Expect When Visiting Our Adult Clinic

Information that you need to know about our adult clinic services and testing:

Services we offer: STD testing, STD education, Vaccines for Hep A, Hep B and Gardasil for HPV protection, Partner Services, treatment of STDs and genital wart treatments.

All visits are strictly confidential!

Average visit time is about 1 hour. This includes paperwork time, counseling, testing, examination results and treatment if needed. Average treatment-only visit is about 15 minutes.

Tests we offer include: Gonorrhea, Chlamydia, Syphilis, Hepatitis C, HIV, and Herpes. In women only we can look for Trichomoniasis (Trich), yeast, and Bacterial Vaginosis (BV).

Please bring your insurance or medical card to your visit. If you do not have a card and need financial assistance, please bring proof of income (recent pay stubs, social security, etc.).

Methods of payment we take are: cash, check, debit and credit cards.

Should I Get Tested?

We recommend STD/HIV testing for anyone who:

• Is sexually active
• Has unprotected sex
• Injects drugs and shares needles
• Exchanges sex for money or drugs
• Is a man that has unprotected sex with other men
• Has a partner who has been diagnosed with STD/HIV
• Has a new partner or more than one partner in the last 3 months
• Has unprotected sex with an injection drug user or a man who has sex with other men

What Is That Bump?

Genital Warts? Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) causes genital warts. It is spread by skin on skin contact with an infected person. Some of these warts can go on to cause cervical or penile cancer.

You can have those warts treated at the Sangamon County Department of Public Health (SCDPH). We use an 80% Trichloracetic Acid treatment to kill the virus, or provide a cream that you can apply to help them disappear. Cost is $15.00 per acid treatment. You can be treated once a week until they are gone.

The Sangamon County Department of Public Health (SCDPH) will offer seasonal influenza immunizations to the public starting September 23rd, 2024, at 2833 South Grand Avenue East, Springfield. Outbound flu site locations are available around the county. See the 2024 Flu Press Release below for outbound locations and dates.

The hours for walk-in clinics are as follows:

SCDPH joins the Centers for Disease Control in their strong recommendation that everyone six months of age and older get their yearly flu vaccination as soon as vaccines become available in their community. Influenza, commonly called the flu, is caused by viruses that infect the respiratory tract and spreads from person to person when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Typical symptoms include a fever of 100° to 103° in adults and often higher in children, dry cough, runny or stuffy nose, headache, muscle aches, and extreme fatigue. The flu season typically runs from October through May. It takes up to 2 weeks for protection to develop after the vaccination.

We accept Medicare Part B, Medicaid, Blue Cross, Aetna, Humana, Cigna, Molina, Meridian, United Healthcare and Health Alliance.

2024 Flu Press Release

Adult and childhood immunizations are offered for a nominal fee. The patient must pay for vaccines not supplied by the State, but there are no income restrictions. A parent or guardian must accompany anyone under 18 years of age. Costs of vaccines will vary due to price changes from the manufacturers.

Travel immunizations are available for persons planning on leaving the country. Travelers should see a health-care provider at least 4–6 weeks before the trip to allow time for vaccines to take effect and to start taking medicine, if indicated. Pre-exposure rabies vaccine may also be obtained for travelers who plan to spend a lot of time outdoors.

Routine, non-acute, school, sports and well-child examinations are provided, by appointment, to children through the age of 18.

Adult physicals or pre-employment physical examinations are provided, by appointment, to persons 19 and older.
Drug Testing may also be offered at the election of the client or as part of the pre-employment physical.

Employers may also require a pre-employment TB Test, a service that is offered on a walk-in basis during clinic hours, no appointment needed. However, this service may be part of your physical exam visit. Persons receiving the tuberculin skin test must return within 48 to 72 hours to have a trained health care worker read the test. TB tests are NOT administered on Thursdays since the Department is not open on the weekend to read the test.

Breast Feeding & Peer Support

New mothers often need guidance and support as they begin the process of breastfeeding their infants. Peer counselors are available to WIC clients to provide support in the home and over the phone.

Early intervention is a program to help infants and toddlers reach their developmental milestones.

We Offer:

• Free evaluations to all children referred that are less than 3 years of age
• Developmental, Physical, Occupational, Nutrition, Behavioral, Audiological and Speech therapy evaluations available
• Family Support
• Assistive Technology services
• Services are provided in the home, daycare, community settings

Early CHOICES: An Inclusion Initiative of the Illinois State Board of Education

The Early CHOICES inclusion initiative promotes high quality inclusive early care and education for each and every child birth to age 5. The goal is to have kids with and without disabilities learning together in the same classroom. Early Intervention Referral Form

Every pregnant or parenting mother who is Medicaid or low-income is assigned a resource nurse. The resource nurse provides information on social and educational services and makes referrals as needed. Home visits are made to provide education on pregnancy and parenting.

Healthy Families is a free home visiting program for eligible first and second time parents in Sangamon and Menard County. Healthy Families helps strengthen families by giving parents the tools and resources to create healthy, nurturing environments for their children.

Home visitors are:

• non-judgmental
• supportive in helping with the challenges of raising a child
• provide encouragement
• help you learn about prenatal care, child development and parenting
• conduct developmental screenings so that you know exactly where your child is developmentally
• share ways to play with your baby that stimulates brain growth
• provide activities that are appropriate for your child’s age
• connect you with community resources

All services are voluntary and help new and expectant parents develop the skills and confidence to raise healthy children.

WIC is a special supplemental nutrition program for women, infants, and children who meet residency, nutrition and income requirements. The program provides healthy foods, advice and referrals to pregnant, postpartum, and breastfeeding women so that they can stay strong and help their children. Infants receive benefits during their first year while children receive benefits up to age five.

Our clinic offers both walk-in and advance scheduling.

Advance appointments are available:
Monday from 4:30 pm to 6:00 p.m.

Walk-in appointments are available:
Monday through Friday from
8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

*Note: We are closed the second Wednesday of every month 8:00 a.m.- 12:00 p.m. for training. We are open for appointments from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Free mammograms, pap tests, and breast examinations are provided for uninsured/underinsured women between the ages of 21 and 64 who live in Illinois. Younger women with symptoms may be eligible.

The Illinois Breast and Cervical Cancer Program (IBCCP) is now accepting women with health insurance that covers breast and cervical screenings, but it will not cover diagnostic services unless a deductible is met. IBCCP may be able to pay “up to” the unmet deductible.

According to the Illinois Administrative Code, health professionals and other mandated reporters are required to report information on communicable diseases to the local health authority (local health department) per the Illinois guidelines contained in the link below. Free Medication Disposal Drop Off

For unwanted or expired medications, simply bring your items to the Sangamon County Health Department during regular business hours. You can also contact your local pharmacy or law enforcement office for additional locations.

• Liquid medication bottles – less than 4 ounces in a zip locked bag

Items NOT accepted:

• Illegal Drugs
• Medical Devices and Batteries
• Aerosol Cans or Inhalers

Needles and Sharps Disposal

SCDPH is currently offering a free residential sharps collection program, made possible by funding from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency. Two options for collection are available during regular business hours at 2833 South Grand Ave East.

1. Pick up your free sharps container. When the container is full you can return it to SCDPH and it will be properly disposed. Upon dropping off the full container, a new container can be picked up.
2. Loose sharps may be deposited in the Sharps Kiosk located in our reception area.
