Jury Duty Information:
Trial by jury is a fundamental principle of our system of justice. The United States Constitution guarantees all people, regardless of race, religion, sex, national origin or economic status the right to trial by an impartial jury of one’s peers. We need those summoned to participate in the jury process to ensure every citizen’s right to have their case decided by an impartial jury selected from a representative pool of prospective jurors.

The Sangamon County Jury Commission consists of one full-time coordinator, one full-time clerk and three per diem commissioners. All are appointed by the Circuit Judges of Sangamon County. The Presiding Judge issues court orders to the jury commission to establish active jury lists. Names of prospective jurors are taken from a merged list of licensed drivers, state ID holders, and registered voters over the age of 18. Potential jurors are chose in a random selection determined by computer. The Jury Commission is responsible for preparation of all jury lists, petit and grand juries.

The following will give you some background information about what to expect when reporting for jury duty.
