The Woodside / Iron Bridge Road project is a major infrastructure initiative aimed at improving safety, traffic flow, and emergency access in southern Sangamon County. By eliminating two at-grade railroad crossings, the project will reduce the risk of vehicle-train collisions and traffic delays caused by passing freight trains. In addition to enhancing public safety, the project will support long-term economic development by improving connectivity in a rapidly growing area. Once complete, the new overpass, underpass, and bridge structures will create a more efficient transportation network for residents, businesses, and first responders alike.

This multi-year project includes the construction of an overpass on Iron Bridge Road, an underpass on Woodside Road, a new bridge over the Union Pacific line, and the development of a frontage road to maintain local access.
The project also features trail detours and long-term enhancements to transportation safety in southern Springfield.
Construction of the Woodside / Iron Bridge project began in Spring 2025 and is expected to continue through late 2028.
