The Sangamon County State’s Attorney’s Office is responsible for representing the State in all mental health cases filed in Sangamon County. As part of these duties, the office assists family members and treatment providers in filling out and filing the paperwork necessary for the commitment of those individuals who are a harm to themselves or others or unable to take care of their basic physical needs. Additionally, the office assists treatment facilities including McFarland Mental Health Center in obtaining orders allowing them to treat individuals who, because of their mental illness, are unable to give informed consent, with psychotropic medications or electro-convulsive therapy. Mental Health hearings are held every Friday at Memorial Medical Center and McFarland Mental Health Center.
