CAPITAL TOWNSHIP HISTORY
Capital Township was established and named by the Sangamon County Board on March 6, 1878. Capital Township is unique among Townships in Illinois for several reasons. The boundaries are contained within Springfield and the roads are maintained by the City of Springfield. In addition, the Sangamon County Treasurer and County Clerk serve as ex-officio officers for Capital Township. The Treasurer serves as Supervisor and the County Clerk serves as Township Clerk and Assessor.
The two primary functions of Capital Township are general assistance and property valuation. The unique connection between Capital Township and Sangamon County provides for a more efficient and reliable way to deliver services. In addition to the clerk and supervisor, four elected Trustees are responsible for legislation, procedural policy and the finances of Capital Township. Effective and efficient customer service is our top priority. We look forward to assisting you!
