Jim Allmon is a lifelong resident of Sangamon County with over two decades of experience in medicolegal death investigation. He is a graduate of Lanphier High School and holds an associate’s degree from Springfield College in Illinois, a bachelor’s degree from Greenville College, and a Master’s Degree in Public Safety and Justice Administration from Western Illinois University.
Jim began his career in death investigation in 2003 as a Deputy Coroner, where he was responsible for conducting death investigations, collecting evidence, drawing toxicology samples, assisting with forensic autopsies, and handling human remains recovery and identification. In 2011, he was promoted to Chief Deputy Coroner, and in 2013, he became Board Certified and earned fellowship status with the American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators (ABMDI).
His experience extends internationally, having assisted in morgue operations following the 2010 earthquake in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, and the 2018 hurricane in San Juan, Puerto Rico. In 2019, he was appointed to the ABMDI National Advisory Council and named Chairman of the State of Illinois Adult Fatality Review Team.
In February 2020, Jim was appointed Sangamon County Coroner. In November of 2020 Jim was elected Coroner to serve a four year term. In November of 2024 Jim was re-elected to serve another four year term. In December of 2024 Jim was appointed to serve as a committeeman with the International Association of Coroner’s and Medical Examiners (IACME). He currently sits on the Executive Council for the State of Illinois Child Death Review Team. Jim is also currently the Chairman of the central Illinois DCFS Child Death Review Team and is an active member of the State of Illinois Terrorism Task Force. Jim maintains active involvement in several national and international organizations focused on forensic science and death investigation, including the National Association of Medical Examiners, the American Academy of Forensic Sciences, and the International Association of Coroners and Medical Examiners. He currently serves as Vice President of the Illinois Coroners & Medical Examiners Association.
