Jim is a life-long resident of Sangamon County, he graduated from Lanphier High School, Springfield College of Illinois with his associate’s degree, Greenville College with his bachelor’s degree and Western Illinois University with a Master’s Degree in Public Safety & Justice Administration. He became employed as a Deputy Coroner in June of 2003. As a Deputy Coroner Jim’s duties included death investigation, collecting evidence, drawing toxicology samples, assisting with forensic autopsies and doing human remains recovery and identification. In 2011 Jim was promoted to Chief Deputy Coroner and in 2013 became Board Certified obtaining his fellowship status through the American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators (ABMDI).  He also has experience in assisting with morgue operations in mass casualty situations both in Port au Prince, Haiti in 2010 after the earthquake and in San Juan, Puerto Rico in 2018 after a hurricane. In 2019 Jim was appointed to the ABMDI National Advisory Council and became the Chairman of the State of Illinois Adult Fatality Review Team. In February of 2020 Jim became the Sangamon County Coroner. He is currently the chairman of the State of Illinois Child Death Review Team, and an active member of the State of Illinois Terrorism Task Force. Jim continues to play an active role as a member of several different national and international associations concentrating in death investigation. These organizations include but are not limited to, the National Association of Medical Examiners, American Academy of Forensic Science, the International Association of Coroners and Medical Examiners and he is currently the Vice President of the Illinois Coroners & Medical Examiners Association.
