The Traffic and Misdemeanor Division is responsible for the prosecution of all violations of the Illinois Vehicle Code (including DUIs) and misdemeanor offenses committed by adults (18 years of age or older) in Sangamon County. The division also handles of the prosecution of “conservation” cases, which are offenses under the Fish and Wildlife Code, including hunting, fishing, and boating offenses.
In 2013, the Traffic and Misdemeanor Division handled approximately 36,000 traffic cases, 2,100 misdemeanors, and 1,200 DUIs.
Most traffic and misdemeanor first appearances are held in Courtroom 6C, Monday through Thursday at either 9:00 a.m. or 1:30 p.m. Court dates for traffic offenses are found near the bottom of each traffic citation. Sangamon County is on a key-date system. Therefore, law enforcement officers have specific court dates to set citations each month.
If you wish to receive court supervision on a traffic case, you must appear in court on the citation date.
If you received an operating uninsured motor vehicle citation and had insurance on the date of the citation, you must appear on your court date and bring proof that you were insured by your insurance company. Generally the same procedure applies to citations for no valid registration or no valid driver’s license.
