Governor Pritzker and Transportation Secretary Biagi Sign Beam for Springfield–Sangamon County Hub

Sangamon County welcomed Illinois Governor JB Pritzker and Illinois Transportation Secretary Gia Biagi to the Sangamon County Building where both officials signed a structural steel beam that will become part of the Sangamon County Hub. The beam is currently displayed on the first floor of the County Building and remains available for public signatures prior to its installation in the Hub’s structure.

The beam signing continues a series of opportunities for community members, local leaders, and project partners to leave their mark on the project before the beam is incorporated into the building’s superstructure. The Hub project represents a significant investment in modernizing transportation infrastructure in downtown Springfield while improving access to county services.

The Springfield–Sangamon County Hub will bring together Amtrak, Greyhound, and Sangamon Mass Transit District (SMTD) services in a single transportation center located along 9th Street. A pedestrian bridge spanning the 10th Street railroad tracks will directly connect the transportation center to the Sangamon County Building, making it easier for residents, visitors, and commuters to transition between transit services and county offices.

In addition to transportation functions, the Hub will include a parking garage, enhanced streetscaping, consolidated county office space, and public amenities such as a grab-and-go coffee area and digital information displays. The facility will also feature permanent exhibits highlighting local history, including an exhibit dedicated to the 1908 Springfield Race Riot. Artifacts uncovered during archaeological excavations tied to the rail relocation project will be incorporated into the exhibit through a partnership with the Illinois State Museum using a community-centered approach to exhibit design. Plans also include space for the Springfield–Sangamon County Sports Hall of Fame.

Members of the public are encouraged to visit the Sangamon County Building to sign the beam before it is installed as construction on the Springfield–Sangamon County Hub continues.
