Sangamon County Begins Effort to Verify Voter Registrations

County Clerk Don Gray today announced that the process to verify voter registrations has begun in Sangamon County. County Clerks are required by law to verify voter rolls every two years to identify voters that have moved, had a name change or passed away.

Over the next couple of weeks, all registered voters will receive a Voter I.D. card by mail. If returned as undeliverable by the Postal Service, an address confirmation letter will be sent to allow for the person to correct their voter registration address.

“It is important that our voter registration records are up to date and clean of inaccurate registrations,” said Gray. “This voter verification process ensures the accuracy of our voter rolls and provides voters the opportunity to update their voting address to maintain their eligibility to vote. Current and accurate voter rolls leads to smooth and secure elections.”

Gray also added that the Voter I.D. cards will reflect all changes to districts resulting from re-districting following the 2020 census, including City of Springfield Wards and sub-districts in Springfield School District #186, Lincoln Land Community College and the Springfield Metropolitan Exposition and Auditorium Authority District.

In addition, due to recent changes to precinct boundaries, Gray also said that many precincts and polling place locations have changed for voters, so he strongly encourages voters to look closely at the information on their the Voter ID Card.

The Election Office also encourages the public to return by mail any Voter I.D. card that was incorrectly delivered to their residence. For any Voter I.D. card that arrives for a person that no longer lives at that address, we ask that the recipient write on the card “not at this address” and place it back in the mailbox for the postal carrier to return to the Election Office.
