Construction Begins on Woodside/Iron Bridge Road Project

A groundbreaking ceremony was held today marking the start of the Iron Bridge Road Overpass and Woodside Road Underpass project—a major infrastructure investment aimed at reducing traffic congestion and enhancing travel safety in this part of Sangamon County.

The $53.3 million project, awarded to Freesen, a division of UCM, Inc., began in mid-April 2025 and is expected to be completed by October 2028. The project is funded through a combination of county, state, and federal dollars.

“This project has been a long time coming,” said County Board Member Brad Miller, who represents District 13, where the construction is taking place. “These rail crossings have long created real challenges for the people who live and travel through this area. By separating the roads from the tracks, we’re making this part of the county safer, more efficient, and better prepared for future growth. I’m grateful to everyone involved for helping make it a reality.”

The project will eliminate two heavily used at-grade rail crossings by building a bridge to carry Iron Bridge Road over the Union Pacific tracks, while lowering Woodside Road to pass under the same rail line via a new bridge. This separation will significantly improve safety and reduce delays for commuters and emergency responders.

In addition to improving traffic flow and safety, the project opens the door for new residential, commercial, and industrial development in the area. A new frontage road will also maintain access for residents along the Iron Bridge corridor.

“The collaboration that brought this project to life demonstrates what’s possible when local, state, and federal partners work together,” said Sangamon County Board Chairman Andy Van Meter. “This is more than just a traffic fix—it’s a smart investment in Sangamon County’s future that will support long-term economic development, job creation, and regional connectivity.”

Throughout the planning of the project, the Sangamon County Highway Department held public open houses and provided opportunities for feedback from residents. The Interurban Trail is expected to remain open throughout the project, with some temporary detours possible to ensure safety.

The public can expect regular updates as work progresses. Residents should plan for construction activity in the area and use extra caution while driving through work zones.
